Celebrating American Heart Month, Black History Month, and National Children’s Dental Health Month in February

February is a big month and we are looking forward to celebrating Black History Month as well as promoting heart health and dental health in these 29 days and beyond.

National Children’s Dental Health Month

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month and we are helping spread the word about the importance of good oral health for children. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children to get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. This year’s NCDHM campaign slogan is “Fluoride in water prevents cavities! Get it from the tap!” Now that is one campaign we can really get behind.

Please visit our good friends and neighbors, Dr. Alexandra Boudreau and Dr. Kevin Ricker at Chatham Pediatric Dentistry located in Briar Chapel Veranda. They provide complete, comprehensive dental care for every patient – young, younger, and everywhere in between.

American Heart Month

Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States? According to the Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, one in four deaths are caused by heart disease every year. Spreading the news about heart health is especially important because many times, heart disease can be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions.

Here are a few ways you can lower your risk of developing heart disease. Help us spread the word by encouraging your friends and family members to join you in these activities.

  • Watch your weight.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure.
  • If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation.
  • Get active and eat healthy.

Worried About Your Insurance?

Are you concerned that your insurance company might ding you if you get a positive diagnosis of a gene that could expose you to cancer? The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) prevents health insurers from using your genetic information in coverage and rating determinations. Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns in regard to this matter.

501 Pharmacy is Dedicated to Protecting Its Patients

Unfortunately, there are some bad apples out there and Medicare wants to make sure you are safe, as do we. You may have seen some information starting that you need doctor’s authorization before completing a Hereditary DNA test.

Every patient we work with, we require the doctor’s first and last name, address, phone number, fax numbers, NPI, and Tax ID # on our paperwork, and you as the patient must sign this paperwork. By adding this information, our Genetic counselors are responsible for adding the patients’ primary care physician as the referring provider on the Hereditary DNA test.

By working with independent pharmacies, Genetix understands that they take strict guidelines on patient privacy when it comes to DNA swabbing. They only process swabbing in a closed environment with the patient and out of sight from other customers in the pharmacy. Each patient is given a welcome patient packet explaining the time-line, and what they can expect on their results along with the agent’s business card placed in the patient folder.

At Genetix and 501 Pharmacy, we want to be transparent as possible with the patients and communicate through the entire process.
