How to Dispose of Meds Without the “Pick and Peel” Struggle
We recently received a great question from a customer: “What is the easiest way to get labels off my bottles? Picking and peeling takes forever, and I have two shopping bags full of them!” We hear you. Life is too short to spend your afternoon fighting with adhesive. If you are looking to declutter your medicine cabinet and protect your privacy, we have a much faster way to handle your returns.
Skip the Peeling: The Ziploc Bag Method
If you are bringing medications to 501 Pharmacy for disposal, you can actually skip the bottle labels entirely. To make the process as easy as possible, we ask that you:
- Empty your medications directly into a clear Ziploc-style bag.
- Bring us the bags for disposal, and keep your bottles at home to recycle.
- Privacy first: By using this method, you don’t have to worry about removing HIPAA-sensitive information from every single container—your personal info stays with you.
What We Can (and Can’t) Accept
While we want to help you clear out your old prescriptions, there are a few safety guidelines we have to follow:
- The “No” List: Unfortunately, we are unable to take back syringes or injections.
- The “Yes” List: We can take back most other prescription medications as long as they are removed from the original packaging and free of any identifying labels.
What About the Empty Bottles?
Once you’ve bagged your meds, you’re left with the orange bottles. If you still want to get those labels off to recycle the plastic, here are two “Pharmacist-Approved” hacks that beat the fingernail-picking method:
- The Hairdryer Trick: Use a hairdryer on high heat for about 30 seconds. The heat softens the glue, allowing the label to slide right off.
- The Freezer Method: Sometimes cold works better than heat! Pop the bottles in the freezer for an hour. The adhesive becomes brittle and often snaps off in one clean piece.
