Allergy Season Is Coming

We love spring, don’t get us wrong. But what we don’t like that comes with the season is allergies. North Carolina is notorious for aggressive pollen, with the yellow dust—a byproduct of coniferous trees like pine, spruce, and fir—settling across outdoor surfaces in waves. The mild winter we had this year already put central NC tree pollen into the moderately high zone, already triggering seasonal allergies for some. Pollen levels are expected to peak in April, but there are precautions you can take now to get through the season as unscathed as possible.

Stock Up on Allergy Medications

The best thing you can do to set yourself up for success this allergy season is to stock up on over-the-counter allergy meds—think Allegra, Zyrtec, and Claritin. Nasal sprays like Flonase and Nasonex are also great for building up your nose to combat pollen. Be sure to come see us and gather everything you need to fight off those allergies! Feel free to ask our staff any questions you may have as to what’s best for you.

Reduce Pollen Exposure

While we all love to spend time outside in the spring, unfortunately, exposing yourself to pollen is a surefire way to get allergy symptoms, especially in the morning when pollen counts are highest. Keep your windows closed—and if you do spend time outdoors, be sure to shower and change into clean clothes, especially before getting into bed.

Avoid Outdoor Chores

In the same vein, during peak allergy season it’s best to avoid activities like mowing your lawn, pulling weeds, gardening, and the like as these stir up allergens. If you absolutely must do these tasks, wear a mask and, again, be sure to clean up afterward.

Keep Indoors Clean

There’s no magical product that can erase allergens from your home, but there are steps you can take to help minimize them. Use air conditioning and get a dehumidifier or high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter in your room(s)—and clean floors often with a vacuum.
