Heartburn and the Holidays
Heartburn and the holidays go together like turkey and gravy.
During the holiday season, it is hard to pass up all the delicious, hearty comfort food as well as the fun libations. And, we do not blame you, we just want to help you fight the pain. 😉 Experiencing heartburn can really take away from the holiday spirit. Stop the yearly tradition of heartburn with the tips below!
Seven Tips to Fight Heartburn This Holiday Season
- Stock up on over-the-counter medications at 501 Pharmacy. We carry Pepcid, Prilosec, NEXIUM®, and more. No prescription is needed, however, if this is an ongoing problem, you might need to talk to your doctor. We recommend starting to take these sooner rather than later so they have time to start working.
- Pace yourself. Eating too quickly can cause heartburn. Slow down and savor all that holiday goodness.
- Try to eat early. Indulging in a big meal and then laying down causes heartburn. Try to give yourself two to three hours between your last meal and bedtime.
- Wear loose clothing. Tight clothing and belts can push acid up into your esophagus.
- Take a walk. Taking a walk after dinner is a great way to prevent or relieve the symptoms of acid reflux.
- Know your trigger foods. Spicy foods, alcohol, onions, coffee, and chocolate are all triggers of indigestion. If you know what foods set you off, you can try to avoid or limit them.
- Limit portion size or eat smaller meals more often. Heartburn symptoms are also linked to how much you eat. Try breaking up your meals over time so you are not stuffed.
