November is National Diabetes Month: Tips for Helping Ease Nerve Pain of Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, or blood sugar, is too high. It affects about 37 million Americans, including adults and youth. November is National Diabetes Month and this year’s focus is on managing diabetes by building your healthcare team.

At 501 Pharmacy, we want to be part of that team and let you know that we are here to help take care of your specific needs. To start, we wanted to share a study that we found that indicates that taking 1 mg of methylcobalamin supplements daily can reduce the nerve pain of diabetes.

Vitamin B12 Helps Ease Nerve Pain of Diabetes

Vitamin B12 at 501 Pharmacy

People with type two diabetes often develop a painful nerve disorder called diabetic neuropathy. This condition can cause numbness, tingling, burning, or pain in their hands or feet. It can be hard to find an effective treatment to help with these systems but we have good news. A recent year-long study has shown vitamin B12 supplements can reduce the nerve pain of diabetes.

All of the participants in the study had type two diabetes and took metformin to keep their blood sugar under control. They also all had low vitamin B12 levels at the start of the study, which could be an effect of metformin. The authors reported that at the end of the study, patients who took the vitamin B12 had improvements in the nerve pain of diabetes and in neurophysiological functioning and quality of life.
