☀️ How to Brighten Your Mood as the Days Get Shorter
It’s that dreaded time of year again: Daylight saving time has ended and our clocks have been set back an hour. As the days get shorter, it’s not unusual to experience some “winter blues”—a dip in mood resulting in feeling a little less energetic or upbeat. The good news? There are simple ways to boost your spirits and stay well all season long. Here are six tips to help you feel your best through the season.
Soak Up Natural Light Whenever You Can
A short walk outside during daylight hours can make all the difference, as sunlight helps regulate your body’s internal clock and boosts serotonin. Aim for at least 15–30 minutes of sunlight daily, especially in the morning.
Consider a Vitamin D Supplement
Less sunlight means your body produces less vitamin D, a nutrient linked to energy and mood—and low levels are common in fall and winter. We carry a variety of vitamins at the pharmacy to help supplement calm and happy feelings during this mood-busting season. Talk to one of our pharmacists about which is right for you!
Stay Active
Exercise is a crucial and effective natural mood booster: It increases endorphins (your “feel-good” hormones) and reduces stress. Even a brisk 20-minute walk or yoga session can help lift your mood. Or consider joining a gym or group fitness studio to make sure you stay on track and accountable.
Keep a Consistent Sleep Routine
As daylight hours change, your body’s sleep-wake cycle can get out of sync. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, avoid screens before bedtime, and create a relaxing wind-down routine—think having a cup of warm tea, reading a book, or taking a bath.
Consume Nutrient-Rich Foods
Fuel your body with foods like leafy greens, whole grains, fruits, and lean proteins—and limit excess sugar and caffeine, which can cause mood dips. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish or supplements) have also been shown to support brain health and mood. We’ve got supplements for that as well at the pharmacy!
Stay Social
During this time of year, you may be tempted to stay in, but social connection is important to mental health. Make plans with friends, call family, or join a local club in your community. Even small interactions like a text or FaceTime can help keep loneliness at bay.
