It May Be About Time to Get Your Colonoscopy

If you used dial-up Internet, you may be due for a colonoscopy (don’t shoot the messenger!). The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer Society now recommend starting screening at 45. Here, we dig into everything you need to know about colonoscopies—and why you might need to schedule one soon.

What Is a Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a medical procedure that examines the large intestine, aka colon, using a thin flexible tube with a camera at the end. Not only is it the hallmark for detecting and preventing colorectal cancer, but a colonoscopy can also identify and remove abnormal growths that may develop into cancer if left untreated.

Why Get a Colonscopy

Colonoscopies are the gold standard for cancer prevention, able to detect colon cancer early—sometimes before symptoms even show. They can also help diagnose other conditions that affect the colon, such as inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, and bowel obstructions. If cancer is present, catching it early makes treatment much more effective. A colonoscopy can also help explain symptoms like bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss—and a clear result can rule out serious conditions!

How Often to Get a Colonoscopy

Routine colonoscopies are recommended for people 45+ (or earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer, certain genetic syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, or other high-risk factors), even without symptoms. If initial results are normal, screenings are usually repeated every 10 years until age 75—after that, screening is individualized based on health, life expectancy, and prior findings. If polyps are round, be sure to follow up every 3–5 years, depending on type and number.
