Stay Sun Safe: Tips for Protecting Yourself From Harmful Rays
The sun is shining, the days are longer—it’s almost summer in North Carolina! Naturally, as soon as the weather gets warm here, we all tend to spend more time outside, and—as we all know—the sun can get hot this time of year. While we encourage you to get outside and take advantage of great weather, it’s also important that you stay protected from harmful UV rays. Here are some tips for staying sun safe this season.
Wear Sunscreen—Always
Most important of all, you should lather up with sunscreen anytime you venture outside, even if it’s just for a short 10-minute walk to your local pharmacy (*wink, wink!*). Use at least SPF 30 broad-spectrum sunscreen and be sure to cover all areas of exposed skin thoroughly, reapplying every two hours or more if you’re swimming or sweating. A water-resistant formula is especially great if you’re getting in major pool time!
Protect Your Eyes
Sunglasses for the win! Go for a pair with UV protection that will block 100% of UV rays, crucial for protecting your eyes. Oh, and it may seem obvious, but never look directly into the sun!
Wear Protective Clothing
If you’re especially prone to sunburn, you may want to invest in some lightweight, breathable long-sleeve tops and pants that can help block UV rays. A wide-brimmed hat that protects your face, ears, and neck from the sun is also a great accessory.
Avoid Peak Hours
The sun is strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., therefore it’s the riskiest time for exposure. Seek shade under an umbrella or tree and be sure to avoid long exposure, especially if you’re not wearing sunscreen. Also remember that even on cloudy days, your skin is still at risk.
Stay Hydrated
Water is your best friend during the summertime! Dehydration can make you more susceptible to sun damage and heat-related illnesses, so be sure to keep a cool water bottle with you at all times. Hydration multipliers like Liquid I.V., Gatorade, and Electrolit are also great to have on hand.
