What Is Alpha-gal Syndrome?

We’ve partnered with VeganMed to help raise awareness about alpha-gal syndrome! Also known as alpha-gal allergy or mammalian meat allergy, this condition is a type of allergic reaction in response to red meat and other animal products. It is potentially life-threatening and caused by certain tick bites. We offer a range of alpha-gal-friendly medications at 501 Pharmacy. Learn more about the syndrome below, and email us at Han@501rx.com to ask if your prescriptions are safe to ingest.

Cause

This condition was first linked to the Lone Star Tick, typically found in the southeastern United States. Now, at least eight tick species are linked to the allergy, and alpha-gal syndrome has been reported on all continents except Antarctica. Because these ticks prey on deer, increasing deer populations are contributing to its spread.

Symptoms

Alpha-gal syndrome symptoms include rashes or digestive discomfort occurring three to six hours after ingesting red meat products. People may also experience hives, sneezing, diarrhea, wheezing or shortness of breath, vomiting, nausea, and even anaphylaxis. These symptoms typically resolve in a few hours—but may last up to a day. Because the condition is relatively new (the first cases weren’t reported until the early 2000s), it may be hard to diagnosis. If you think you may have alpha-gal syndrome, reach out to your doctor immediately.

Treatment

Preventing tick bites is the best way to avoid getting alpha-gal syndrome. Avoid grassy, brushy, and wooded areas where ticks may be present; use EPA-registered insect repellent; and perform a thorough tick check after hiking or walking through heavily wooded spots. Those who are diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome should avoid eating meat from animals, such as beef, pork, lamb, venison, or rabbit. Allergic reactions caused by alpha-gal exposure can be treated with epinephrine (aka adrenaline), antihistamines, and oral corticosteroids.
